KABUL (PAN): Nearly two thousands people, at separate gatherings held in this capital city on Saturday, pledged support for President Hamid Karzai's reelection bid.

The first gathering, organised by a private company called Afghan Health, was attended by hundreds of people including youth, athletes and residents of Kabul.

Head of the company Habibullah Sahibzada said he believed Karzai was the best person to become president for another five-year term.

Youth leader Zabihullah Bahar told the participants none of his challengers offered a better replacement of the incumbent president in the current situation.

Bawar Hotak, head of the Bodybuilding Federation of Afghanistan, also announced his support to Karzai on behalf of athletes.

Another gathering, organised by the president's brother Mahmood Karzai, was attended by more than one thousands people from Logar, Bamyan, Parwan, Baghlan and Helmand provinces.

Muhammad Ibrahim Masool, head of a Parwan development council, said they were behind Karzai in the larger national interest. "We want peace, stability and elimination of corruption," he added.

Mehrabanuddin, a member of the Logar development council, claimed he had 6,000 voters who would exercise their franchise in support of the incumbent head of state.
