Maiwand roadside bombing kills 7 of a family

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Seven people of a family have been killed in a roadside bombing in the Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, an official said on Friday.
The hapless family from Zherai district came under bomb attack on their way to a wedding ceremony, Faisal Javed, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the fatalities included two women and another three people were wounded as a result of the improvised explosive device blast on Thursday evening.
According to the gubernatorial spokesman, the civilians suffered the casualties when the motorised rickshaw they were travelling in struck the roadside bomb.
He blamed the Taliban for planting the landmine, but there was no immediate reaction from the insurgent movement.
On July 31, the UN said civilian casualties in Afghanistan rose by 23 percent during the first six months of the current year, blaming most of the deaths and injuries on improvised explosive device (IEDs) attacks.
In its mid-year report, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented 1,319 civilian deaths, compared with 1,158 a year earlier. More women and children became victims of the 12-year-old conflict.
