JALALABAD/LASHKARGAH (PAN): Gatherings were held in the support of some presidential candidates in Nangarhar, Laghman and Helmand provinces on Monday.

In Nangarhar, over a thousand people voiced support to incumbent President Hamid Karzai, seeking a second term in the elections scheduled for August 20. At the gathering, organised by Zaal Mohammad, participants hailed Karzai as an ideal contender for the top office.

Around 800 people supported Dr Abdullah Abdullah, another aspirant, in Rodat district of the same province.

Mirwais Yasini visited Jalalabad and led a rally from the Public Health Square to the famous Pashtunistan Roundabout. He urged the people to vote him in the upcoming polls.

In the neighboring Laghman province, a group of 300 nomads led by Mullah Abdul Qader Kochi supported Karzai. A nomad tribal leader, Abdul Hameed Ibrahimkhel, asked the president to stop air strikes by foreign troops and avoid converting pastures into townships.

In the southern Helmand province, 500 people voiced support to Hamid Karzai at a public meeting in Mukhtar locality of Lashkargah, the provincial capital.

Karzai's campaign manager in the province, Mulla Ameer Mohammad, asked the participants to vote for Karzai in the polls.
