KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday expressed its inability to hold the presidential election on July 20, citing lack of time, and promised to announce a new schedule in two days.
According to the previous schedule, the IEC has to announce the final list of presidential candidates on March 26 and hold the presidential, the provincial council and Wolesi Jirgaelections in southern Ghazni province on July 20.
The primary results of presidential polls should be announced on August 10 and the final result on September 14.
But Mualana Mohammad Abduhu, an IEC commissioner, said they could not implement the current election schedule, adding the election body was 16 working days behind from its schedule.
He said in line with the amended election law, the commission could not bring changes to the election schedule after two days, therefore, the commission should make changes within two days.
He said the Wolesi Jirga results from Herat, Balkh, Paktika and Hindu minority would be announced at the end of the week and efforts were on to announce the results of Ghor, Badghis and Logar provinces as well.
