KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of people, including government and election officials and four candidates, have been arrested in connection with election related crimes, the Attorney General Office (AGO) said on Monday.
The AGO said the suspects, including 22 employees of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and 32 government workers, were under investigation in connection with 81 electoral crime cases.
Addressing reporters here, AGO spokesman Jamshid Rasouli said in total 230 people had been arrested, including 155 common people. The detainees hail from 19 different provinces and most of their cases have been completed and dispatched to their provinces.
Rasouli said an agreement between the AGO and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) had been inked on joint investigation into certain cases.
He added 554 fraud Tazkeras had been recovered during the investigation process by a committee tasked by the Presidential Palace after complaints were lodged by certain politicians.
He said five individuals had been arrested by the committee over falsification of eight Tazkera record books in Paktika.
He said some Wolesi Jirga members and politicians who always complained against fraudulent Tazkeras did not cooperate with the investigative committees.
