Elaborate poll security plans ready, Senate told

KABUL (PAN): Elaborate security plans have been chalked out for next year’s elections to thwart “regional plots” to sabotage the process, senior security officials told the upper house on Tuesday.
The plans involving personnel of all security organs would be implemented in phases, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi, Deputy Interior Minister Abdul Rahman Rahman and the deputy head of the National Directorate of Security said.
Rahman informed the Senate said security organs had prepared their plans in line with the decisions taken by the Cabinet. Materials needed for the distribution of voter cards had been sent to provinces, he said.
Without going into details, he said efforts had been launched on regional level to sabotage election process in Afghanistan.
But the Afghan security forces had launched their efforts to ensure tight security measure around polling centres, he said, adding 500 policemen, including policewomen, had been deputed to 41 voter registration centres to keep security as part of the first phase.
In the second phase, Rahman said security measures were being adopted for 434 voter registration centres to be opened in districts. Afghan National Army troops and NDS agents would assist police in maintaining security on the Election Day, he said.
Gen. Karimi said security officials had held a series of meetings in provinces to discuss security for the upcoming elections. He said the meetings would continue in order to ensure better security.
