KABUL (Pajhwok): The Mesharano Jirga on Tuesday decided to summon members of a fact-finding commission on the fall of Kunduz city, the capital of northern Kunduz province, to brief the upper house about the pros and cons of their inquiry.
Two months back, hundreds of Taliban gunmen stormed Kunduz City from various directions, capturing the strategic city after a few hours of clashes with security forces.
Security forces, however, took back the control of Kunduz city and drove the rebels from the area after two weeks of fighting.
President Ashraf Ghani appointed the fact-finding delegation comprising Amrullah Saleh, a former head of the National Directorate of Security, Ghulam Farooq Warak, a former education minister, Fazel Karim Aimaq, Ayub Rafiqi and Abdullah Mohammadi to investigate the Kunduz incident from all angels independently.
The commission’s main focus was on three fronts; collecting documents, questioning the central departments and visiting the field and analysing the evidence and documents.
Recently, the commission submitted its findings, saying the leadership failure was the main factor behind the fall of Kunduz City to the Taliban insurgents.
Misuse of resources and lack of coordination among security forces were principal reasons for the brief capture of the capital of northern Kunduz province, said Amrullah Saleh.
Lawmaker Rahmatullah Asakzai criticised the commission’s performance and said there was some information which could be shared with the people.
Therefore, he said, the inquiry commission should be summoned to the house to brief the public representatives about the fall of Kunduz city.
Another lawmaker Zalmai Zabuli also demanded the members of the inquiry commission to be summoned to brief lawmakers about information they did not share with the media regarding incompetence of the provincial administration.
