Patang’s remarks generate heat in Senate

KABUL (PAN): The Senate on Wednesday gave Finance Minister Omar Zakhilwal an appreciation letter for exposing the Wolesi Jirga members involved in smuggling and seeking favours from the government.
On Monday, Zakhilwal revealed the names of several lawmakers who he accused of smuggling and making illegal demands on the government.
The MPs include Abdul Zahir Qadir, Mohammad Naeem Hamidzai Lalai, Mohammad Azim Mohseni, Mohammad Arif Rahmani, Mahmud Khan Sulaimankhel and Samiullah Samim.
Addressing the Senate session today, the minister said in addition to those already exposed, some more members were also complicit in illicit actions.
“There are others who have committed similar acts. They should draw a lesson from Monday’s disclosures and stop doing unlawful things,” Zakhilwal said, without elaborating.
Appreciating the ministerial move, Senate Complaints Commission head Dr. Zalmai Zabuli said they were ready to cooperate with the government in unmasking smugglers and other corrupt elements.
