PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The provincial council members of central Logar province on Thursday claimed progress in combating administrative corruption and addressing people’s grievances.
Hasibullah Stanikzai, the council head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the PC members performed their duty well despite problems with local officials.
“Local officials do not properly cooperate with us. But our responsibilities and authorities demand us to stop corruption in departments about which people have complained,” he added.
Stanikzai said people had trusted them with their votes and now it was each member’s responsibility to prevent corruption and expose corrupt officials.
“Based on our promises, we won’t allow any department to create troubles for residents instead of providing them with services,” he continued.
Stanikzai claimed the education, public health and municipality were rife with corruption, but their proper monitoring had resulted in some positive changes.
Adalat Abdul Rahimzai, the provincial deputy head, said many residents approached the council seeking solution to their problems. “If the residents face problems in provincial departments, they come to us and we resolve their problems in coordination with the departments.”
He added the council was trying to bridge the gap between the government and the people and to create a sound administration in the province in coordination with local departments.
Asmatullah, a resident of Pul-i-Alam, said: “When people visit the council, they always find the PC members welcoming. They find ways to resolve our problems and we are happy from them.”
He added a majority of the council members were experienced individuals, something helpful in fighting corruption.
Mohammad Kazim Ibrahimzada, a civil society activist, said the council’s monitoring authority had positive outcome. “I want the council members to honour their election campaign promises and work hard in bringing administrative reforms.”
The provincial council has nine members, including two women.
