Teacher given cash, abandons plan to sell baby

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Some philanthropists in northern Balkh province on Friday extended financial assistance to a poverty-stricken teacher and thereby prevented the planned sale of his daughter.
Members of civil society, representatives of the provincial council and local traders visited the female schoolteacher's residence in the Karta Noor-i-Khuda neighbourhood of Mazar-i-Sharif to deliver the cash.
Most of the philanthropists neither gave their names nor the amounts of money they donated to the poor woman, saying their objective was to keep him from selling his daughter.
But one source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News Juma Khan Hamdard and Shamshad TV had given the man 50,000 and 25,000 afghanis.
Sabza, 35, confirmed she planned to sell her month-old daughter to a colleague for 25,000 afghanis. “How can I make ends meet in a 7,000afs monthly salary? I’m looking after four children and paying house rent.”
Her husband had gone to Iran several times but could not find a job returned empty-handed, forcing the teacher to sell her baby. Sabza welcomed the financial support as a goodwill gesture.
