KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A number of tribal elders, religious scholars, civil society activists and youth representatives on Saturday asked the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to promptly announce the presidential election result.

At a gathering in Khost City, they asked the Reform and Unanimity team, led by presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, to avoid creating problems by threatening the Afghans with launching “Orange and Green Movements.”

A Wolesi Jirga member from Khost, Hamayun said Khost residents knew their rights and they would not allow anyone to play with them. He warned Khostis would embark on massive protests if the IEC further delayed the results.

“Some mafia groups have been trying to create differences between the two candidates. We want the candidates to pay attention to these conspiracies and allow no one to interfere in their matters,” he stressed.

The lawmaker asked the Abdullah’s team to encourage its supporters to work for national unity instead of creating instability.

Religious scholar Maulvi Mohammad Sardar Zadran told the gathering that some foreign intelligence networks were out to create rifts among Afghans on ethnic lines.

He asked the two candidates not to provoke linguistic and regional strife and instead form a national unity government and bring peace and stability to Afghanistan.

“We ask the IEC to announce the election results immediately and introduce the new president to the Afghans,” he said.

Another tribal elder Rassoul Mohammad Tanai held similar views. He said no one would be allowed to create problems for the nation.

“Some individuals in the candidates’ teams want instability in the country so that they could achieve their goals,” he alleged.
