MAC floated unity govt idea: Massoud

KABUL (Pajhwok): Ahmad Wali Masood, leader of Milli Agenda Conference (MAC), claimed on Wednesday his party had first floated the idea regarding the formation of a national unity government.
Addressing a press conference here, Masood said MAC had presented the suggestion months before US Secretary of State John Kerry intervened to resolve the electoral deadlock.
This type of government is not merely meant to share power but to form a strong government, according to the MAC leader, who stressed both presidential candidates must abide by this principle.
The youngest brother of Ahmad Shah Masood, the slain Afghan resistance fighter, said a government of national unity was the only way to take Afghanistan out of current crisis.
He said both election teams were invited to the meeting today but supporters of leading candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai did not attend.
Syed Hussain Ali Balkhi, representing Abdullah Abdullah’s camp attended the gathering. In his remarks, Balkhi supported the idea of forming a national unity government.
Another participant, Safi Siddiqui, said people’s choice to elect a new president should be respected. He urged the audit process must not spare any region and thoroughly investigate the ballots.
He criticized Abdullah for not respecting election rules after the results were made public.
