MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Commander of Afghan Border Police Gen. Mohammad Shafique Fazli on Wednesday said Pakistani forces had intensified rocket attacks on eastern provinces to sabotage the June 14 presidential runoff election.
Gen. Fazli, who introduced a newly-appointed border police commander for the northern zone at a ceremony in Mazar-i-Sharif, said Pakistan was trying to scuttle the runoff vote.
At the change of command ceremony, Gen. Mohammad Zaman Momozai was replaced by Lt. Gen. Mohammad Naeem Haidari as the new border police commander for the northern zone.
Speaking on the occasion, Gen. Fazli said Islamabad wanted the Afghans to be deprived of their right to elect a future president.
He said Pakistani forces had recently fired hundreds of missiles into eastern Afghan provinces, forcing hundreds of families into fleeing homes, besides inflicting life and property losses on the dwellers.
The general said Afghan security forces, including the border guards, were fully capable of maintaining security for the runoff elections, saying the enemies would not be allowed to disrupt the national process.
He said additional border forces had been deployed along the Durand Line to closely observe the situation and prevent enemies from penetrating into Afghanistan.
At the gathering, Gen. Fazli praised the services of Gen. Mamozai as the border police commander in the north, saying he had been able to effectively protect the borders and strengthen installations for Afghan border forces during his 14-month tenure.
