KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The governor of southeastern Khost province on Monday promised all-out efforts to prevent fraud in the second round of the presidential election, slated for June 14.
Addressing a meeting on preparations for the polls, Abdul Jabbar Naeemi said his administration had evolved a comprehensive plan for the runoff vote in coordination with relevant authorities.
They would try to ensure the opening of all polling sites on the Election Day and enable voters to reach their without any hassle, the governor said. “The imperfections seen in the first round won’t recur.”
No one would be allowed to interfere in the election process so as to ensure transparency in the democratic exercise, according to the governor, who once again warned against undue meddling.
He added the provincial government had put in place the requisite arrangements to enable the people to vote for candidates of their choice. “We hope the elections will pass off peacefully.”
Naeemi urged religious scholars to play an effective role in motivating the people to stream to polling stations to elect their future president.
Police chief, Col. Faizullah Ghairat, promised foolproof security for the runoff elections. He claimed insurgent activities had been curbed considerably in Khost.
Independent Election Commission (IEC) official Sahibuddin Zadran said all polling sites in Khost had been functional in the first round of the ballot on April 5.
In the runoff vote, he said, 697 polling sites would be opened in Khost, compared with 579 in the first round. The increase in the number of the polling stations will help eligible voters exercise their franchise.
