KABUL (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament on Monday granted a vote of confidence to President Ashraf Ghani’s seven nominees as members of the constitutional oversight body and one member of the Supreme Court High Council.
The president has introduced the nominees to the house on November 30 for a vote of trust.
The approved Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of the Constitution (ICOIC) include Dr. Mohammad Qasim Hashimzai, Ghezal Haris, Dr. Abdul Rauf Harawi, Mohammad Arif Hafiz, Dr. Abdullah Shefahi and Dr. Sayed Abubakkar Mutaqqi. While the Supreme Court High Council nominee is Abdul Haseeb Ahadi.
From 184 lawmakers present, each nominee was required to obtain at least 93 votes for success.
Ahadi received 149 votes, Hashimzai 113, Haris 132, Shefahi 125, Hafiz 131, Mutaqqi 126 votes and Harawi 128 votes from lawmakers.
Under Article 157 of the Constitution, the ICOIC shall be established in accordance with the provisions of the law.  Members of the commission shall be appointed by the President with the endorsement of the House of People.
