KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations on Sunday welcomes Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission (IEC) announcement of the final results from the April provincial council polls.

Preliminary results of the elections held on April 5 were unveiled on May 20, but the final outcome was initially delayed by the high volume of complaints submitted to the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).

The results were further postponed by the electoral authorities’ focus on the presidential election, which eventually threw up the national unity government, led by President Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

In a statement, the United Nations congratulated the successful candidates and acknowledged the commitment of IEC and IECC to deliver the final results.
