420 election complaints, appeals addressed

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Tuesday said that hundreds of appeals and complaints from southern and southeastern zones had been addressed.
The complaints and appeals were dealt with at three public hearings in the presence of civil society activists, election observers, media people and representatives of presidential candidate Dr Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.
IECC Chairman Abdul Sattar Sadat said the complaints and appeals had been registered in Nuristan, Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, Paktia, Paktika and Khost provinces.
The cases alleged involvement of local commanders, provincial council candidates, election workers, police officials and Afghan National Army (ANA) personnel in ballot stuffing in favor of a specific candidate, Sadat said.
He added most of the complaints had been registered against the presidential candidate, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, who suspended his relations with the election management bodies three weeks ago.
Sadat added both candidates had the right to defend their votes, but Abdullah’s team stayed away from the public hearing but its absence would not affect the hearing process.
