KABUL (Pajhwok): Ahmad Zia Masood, presidential runner Dr. Zalmai Rassoul’s choice for first vice-president, on Thursday alleged some extremist circles outside Afghanistan were trying to disrupt peace in Afghanistan.
Addressing a campaign rally, arranged in his support by a pro-development and democracy alliance, he said some foreign forces were out to sabotage peace efforts in Afghanistan.
Masood added the country had faced tremendous challenges throughout its history. Without naming any country, he accused some neighbours of interfering in the internal affairs of Afghanistan.
He said the country direly needed to build close ties with the international community to get rid of foreign interference and achieve economic stability.
International support was imperative at the present critical juncture in terms of security because Afghan forces could not ensure full security on their own, Massoud argued.
If the team headed by Rassoul succeeded in elections, he promised, an era of good governance and vast investment would dawn in the country.
He said youth would be given the lion’s share in politics and those who had been promoting personal interest would be sidelined. “If we win the elections, a new era of economic stability will be ushered in.”
Massoud urged militants to shun violence and take part in politics to rebuild their country. “Fighting cannot resolve problems; rather it multiplies hardships,” he remarked.
He thanked the pro development and democracy alliance for its support, saying his team would measure up to its expectations.
Abdul Razzaq Asmar, head of the alliance, said they had thrown their weight behind Rassoul after meetings with almost all presidential runners.
