UNSC wants assailants brought to justice

WASHINGTON (PAN): Strongly condemning the terrorist attack on the US Consulate in Herat, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday asserted no terrorist act could reverse the path toward Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability.
Extending its deep sympathy and sincere condolences to families of victims of the heinous act and to the Afghan government and people of Afghanistan, the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of the reprehensible act to justice.
“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and all obligations under international law, in particular human rights, refugee and humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,” it said.
In a late-night statement, council members reiterated their serious concern at the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida and illegal armed groups to the local population, national security forces, diplomatic facilities, international troops and assistance efforts in Afghanistan.
