KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai Tuesday condemned deadly 'terrorist attacks' on a polling station in the central province of Uruzgan and on the

Kabul-Jalalabad Highway east
of the capital.

More than a dozen people including Afghan soldiers were killed and scores wounded in the assaults that came two days before the presidential and provincial council elections and reinforced widespread security concerns.

The president said: "The enemies of Afghanistan -- afraid of a high voter turn-out in the elections -- are trying to prevent the people going to polling stations with such terrorist acts."

In a statement from the Presidential Palace, Karzai said: "Afghans are aware of the significance of polls and would stream to polling stations to show they are averse to the wild acts of their enemies."

The president extended his heartfelt condolences to families of the victims of the Uruzgan and Kabul assaults and prayed for the speedy recovery of the wounded.
