KABUL (PAN): In a bid to gather sufficient support to run in this month's presidential elections, some of the candidates toured different provinces and addressed public meetings on Thursday.


Around 30 vehicles packed with supporters of Dr Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, the key challenger to President Hamid Karzai, honking horns and waving colourful campaign posters, paraded on roads in Jalalabad city, centre of eastern Nangarhar province, on Thursday.


The announcers through loudspeakers called on the people to vote for Ghani.


About 500 people in Shinwar district of the province also pledged support to Gahni at a gathering on Thursday.


Similarly, separate gatherings were organized in Kama and Surkhrud districts in support of the incumbent Hamid Karzai.


Two separate gatherings were held in support of Syed Jalal Karim Nabigha and Dr Abdullah Abdullah in eastern Kunar province.


About three hundreds people attended the gathering held in support of Babigha and nearly two hundreds people were present at the meeting voicing support to Abdullah.


Addressing a gathering of about three hundreds people in the same province, head of Kunar National Reconciliation Commission (NRC), Haji Mohammad Rozi, appealed for vote to Hamid Karzai.


In southeastern Khost, Insaf Political Party, led by Engineer Zadran declared support to Karzai in the polls. The speakers said Karzai had done a lot for the welfare of the country.


Elsewhere, in central Bamyan, over 400 people held a meeting in support of Dr Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and termed him a suitable personality for the presidency.


Meanwhile, hundreds of women voiced their support to Karzai in northern Takhar province. The speakers said Karzia provided the women opportunities to shape their destiny.


Also on Thursday, nearly 200 students of Kabul and Herat universities in western Ghor province asserted to vote for the candidate who was willing to asphalt the main road in the province.
