TIRINKOT (PAN): The Governor's House and Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission (AIEC) officials have been jointly working to encourage residents of central Uruzgan province to cast their vote in the presidential and provincial council elections in consultation with tribal elders and locals, an official has said.
Uruzgan Deputy Governor Alhaj Khudai Rahim Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News the officials were holding consultation meetings with tribal leaders and locals in districts and provincial capital, Tirinkot, for the purpose.
He added they held a meeting with some 300 tribal leaders and religious scholars two weeks back. The elders were asked to encourage those with voting cards, particularly the women to cast their vote.
"We have achieved public support and they are cooperating with us in every matter," he said.
The reconstruction efforts in the province had been accelerated which helped reduced the gap between public and government, said the deputy governor, who added the public have been involved in selecting and implementing the welfare projects. "By this way, the government and people are coming closer to each other," he explained.
He cited Dar Afshan area that previously had no access to the government officials in Tirinkot, but now the elders of the area were participating in meetings with the officials to strengthen the efforts for bringing security to the area.
Asphalting work on a road linking Chora district with capital city has been started. The road would benefit the people of Daikundi and Gizaab districts.
Khan said the provincial 'Emergency Relief Commission' had stocked 1200 tones of wheat and some of them were dispatched to the districts and the remaining would also be provided to the families affected by floods in January and February.
With support from technical advisors, Rahim said, the capacity of administrative staffers in the province had been enhanced as they were now able to draft proposals and official letters in English language by using computer.
The advisors had a vital role in arranging names of staffers, class-IV employees and contract teachers in one file in secretariat of the province, he concluded.
