KABUL (PAN): Americans are increasingly opposed to the war in Afghanistan, where militant-linked violence has seen a sharp uptick in the lead-up to the August 20 presidential and provincial council elections.

Support for the war among American has dropped 49 percent in May to 41 percent in August, according to a new opinion poll that indicates 54 percent oppose the military campaign against insurgents in Afghanistan.

Aversion to the war is up by six points, suggests the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll that was conducted from July 31 through August 3. As many as 1,136 adult US citizens were surveyed. The sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said: "Afghanistan is almost certainly the Obama policy that Republicans like the most. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans support the war in Afghanistan. Three-quarters of Democrats oppose the war."
