MAHMUD RAQI/QALAT (PAN): Unidentified gunmen shot dead a campaigner for presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in Nijrabi district of the central province of Kapisa last night, officials said on Wednesday.

Sultan Muhammad Safi, district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Haji Abdul Sattar, a campaigner for Dr. Abdullah, was gunned down in his house located in Badakhshi area.

Maulvi Ghulam Eishan, provincial campaign manager for the former foreign minister, confirmed the murder. But he was unaware if Abdul Sattar had any enemies.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the slaying.

Elsewhere, Taliban militants hurled a grenade at President Hamid Karzai's campaign centre for women in the volatile southern province of Zabul.

Col. Ghulam Jilani Farahi, deputy police chief, said the campaign centre was in the house of MP Torpekai in Qalat. He added the bomb missed the target and there had been no injuries.

On condition of anonymity, a male member of Torpekai's family said the grenade hit the security guards' camp in front of the house.

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, Taliban spokesman, said that one policeman was hurt in the attack.

The militants have, in the past, targeted campaigners and campaign centers in different provinces. Ahmad Jawed & Bismillah Pashtunmal
