Farah prisoners go on hunger strike

FARAH CITY (PAN): More than 180 prisoners in western Farah province have been on hunger strike against the authorities’ refusal to remit their jail terms, an official said on Saturday.
As many as 182 inmates, who went on hunger strike on Thursday, were yet to resume eating and drinking, a well-placed source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the prisoners were protesting against non-implementation of a presidential decree, giving them remissions. The strike was also confirmed by a National Directorate of Security (NDS) operative, who said they were investigating the issue.
But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid linked the hunger strike to misconduct of jail staff and inordinate delays in investigation of inmates’ cases. He urged human rights organisations to pay heed to the problem.
