Anti-graft decree enforced in Balkh: official

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Anti-corruption officials claimed on Wednesday President Hamid Karzai decree on administrative corruption had1been fully enforced in northern Balkh province.
Since March 21, around 100 incidents of corruption took place in northern zone and officials involved had been arrested and referred to prosecutors.
To review progress so far made in connection with the presidential decree issued last year, a gathering was held in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital, bringing together UNAMA representatives,
anti-corruption, provincial and security officials and human rights activists.
The anti-corruption unit chief for the northern zone, Shamsullah Javed, told reporters after the gathering that their aim was to banish administrative graft from government entities in Balkh.
He said the gathering conferred on progress so far made in connection with implementation of the presidential decree.
He said the participants also stressed the need for closer cooperation between judicial and security organs in combating corruption.
He said the creation of a joint committee of security and judicial organs was also proposed at the gathering in order to speed up efforts at eliminating the menace from government offices.
Javed said recently a government official was accused of accepting $30,000 from an individual, but they could not bring him to justice.
The proposed committee would help resolve such problems, he hoped.
He said six individuals had been arrested on corruption charges and referred to prosecutors in the northern zone since March 21 and more than 2000 people provided information on administrative corruption.
