MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): A vocational training and literacy programme, a UN-funded project, was launched for inmates at the central jail in northern Balkh province on Tuesday, an official said.
Around 140 detainees, including 60 women, would learn dressmaking and embroidery and attend literacy courses as part of the programme, the central jail commander, Col. Abdullah Azizi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said 60 percent of income from handcrafts would go to prisoners and the remaining would be used as salaries to trainers and purchasing raw materials. A shop would be established outside the prison to put on sale handcrafts of inmates.
Mohammad Akram, one of the detainees, happy with the programmer, said he would like to learn dressmaking and embroidery skill until his jail term ended.
