Elders call for foolproof election security

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (APN): Tribal elders from the northern zone met held a traditional assembly in Mazar-i-Sharif to discuss possible problems in the lead-up to next year’s presidential and provincial council elections.
Arranged by the People’s Traditional Reform Jirga, the gathering was attended by elders, influential figures and youth from Balkh, Faryab, Sar-i-Pul and Jawzjan provinces. The participants asked the government to pay due attention to election security.
Prof. Ghulam Farooq Khpalwak, an organiser and teacher at the Balkh University, told Pajhwok Afghan News the security situation had been extremely bad in certain parts of the northern zone during the previous elections.
A number of people could not exercise their franchise right and the security situation deteriorated in several parts of the province as a result, he recalled, saying distant polling stations had been another problem for voters.
Haji Aminullah, who came from Faryab to attend the meeting, also complained some people had been disenfranchised. He called for the authorities to ensure fool-proof security measures for the upcoming ballots.
