Kunar elders announce support to new govt

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Tribal elders and religious scholars on Saturday held a gathering in eastern Kunar province, announcing their support to the new government.

The gathering was organised at the provincial Governor’s House, where a large number of tribal elders and religious scholars coming all the way from various districts and the provincial capital, Asadabad, were present.

Kunar Ulema Council head Maulvi Abdul Rahman in his address to the gathering defended the central government’s decision to uphold the ganging of men involved in the Paghman gang-rape incident.

He said they believed peace and security could be maintained in the country if laws were equally enforced and the supremacy of law ensured.

Tribal elder Malak Sherin urged President Ahmadzai to do away with corruption in civil and military departments through introducing an effective punishment system.

He said the president had acted on his promises and the people of Kunar stood by him.

A tribal elder from Dangam district, Noor Karim, renewed his call on the president to explain his stance to the people on the Pakistani rocket attacks.

He said the people of Kunar were ready to fight alongside their security forces to protect the country’s borders.

Acting governor Shujaul Mulk Jalala Khan told the gathering that he would convey all their demands and concerns to the president.

He said President Ahmadzai had promised him that a dam would be constructed on the Kunar River.
