KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): The new provincial council chief on Thursday vowed to take solid steps towards improving security, bringing reforms to government entities, fighting corruption and resuming development activities in southern Kandahar province.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Haji Syed Jan Khakrezwal said the numerical strength of Kandahar provincial council members had been increased this time and all the members would work hard to carry forward their affairs in more effectively way than the past.
The Kandahar council had 10 members during the last two terms, but this time that the number has been increased to 19, he said.
Since the administrative board election, Khakrezwal said the new body had met thrice discussing how to improve security, introduce reforms, strengthen anti-corruption efforts and resume developmental projects.
He viewed as comparatively good the security situation in Kandahar than in other provinces keeping in view the overall situation in the country. However, he said problems in remote parts remained.
He said they would make joint efforts with the provincial administration in ensuring stability and peace in Kandahar and for improved security situation, they would take local security officials into confidence.
On targeted killings, the council chief said the enemy of Afghans had long been targeting leading personalities and the form of violence had spread to Kabul and other provinces.
He said insecurity increased following the election impasse between incumbent President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah.
He warned the law and order situation would further deteriorate if prompt decisions were not taken to form the Cabinet.
He said tackling and resolving problems at central level would leave positive impact on security in remote provinces and would put things on track.
