Mayor: Sharan on road to development

HARANA (PAN): The mayor on Tuesday said the reconstruction process in the capital of southeastern Paktika province had been stepped up in order to facilitate residents.Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, Syed Obaidullah Sadat said Sharan, whose residents previously faced a lot of problems, had recently been granted urban status.
Sadat said a cleanliness campaign in the city had been completed at a cost of $400,000 provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
All roads and streets were being paved and constructed and work on the second lane of a road leading to Orgun district would be launched soon, the mayor said.
“Work on this road on the city’s edge, costing $300,000, will be initiated in the next two days,” said Sadat, who added damaged footpaths and buildings were being repaired with financial cooperation from shop owners and residents.
A recreation park for youth and 15 culverts were also in the pipeline, with a 20-year strategic plan for Sharan set to be launched soon, the mayor continued.
He explained 4,000 families would be distributed residential plots south of the city under the strategic plan, which also included a university and a building for the provincial council.
West and north of the city, Sadat said trade centres and marketplaces would be constructed under the two-decade plan. Professional and experienced individuals will be appointed to the municipality to streamline its activities.
Paktika was one of the provinces which had long been neglected, he complained, asking the government to give special attention to its development.
Residents expressed their pleasure over new development schemes and acknowledged much had been done with regard to the city’s cleanliness and reconstruction.
