GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Afghan Local Police (ALP) General Director Gen. Ali Shah Ahmadzai on Monday acknowledged some groups opposed the force that was poised to play a crucial role during next year’s elections.
During his visit to southern Ghazni province, Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News some of domestic and foreign groups, which were averse to the ALP existence, provoked people to resist the NATO-backed force and lodge complaints against it.
He deployed 50 local policemen in Andar district and 100 others in Giru, saying the ALP personnel would play an important role in maintaining security during presidential and provincial council elections.
“They will be impartial and will not support any specific candidate,” he promised, saying that 1,350 ALP members would be recruited to ensure better security in Ghazni province.
“On the basis of credible intelligence, they will sack suspected local policemen,” he said in response a query regarding insider attacks and ALP members defecting to the Taliban.
