ASAD ABAD: (PAN): The security and law and order in Kunar province is now significantly improved, officials said.
Kunar Governor Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi said all the districts of the province including the capital of Kunar is in government control, adding that none of the check posts fell to militants.
He said Kunar shares 260 kilometers long border with Pakistan and most of the roads are four lanes.
He went on to say that members of Afghan Border Police have been deployed, which helped ensure security elsewhere in the province’s districts except Chappa Dara and Ghazi Abad localities. The two mentioned districts experiencing insecurity because both the districts situated in far- flung mountainous region.
He noted that most of the districts got paved roads now, saying that security situation has considerably improved in areas under his control after the departure of coalition forces.
To authenticate his claim of bolstered security against the backdrop of coalition forces departure, he said that the Pachir district--- long known as a death valley--- has now been known as a life valley instead after the deployment of local security forces.
There was time when the Asmar, Ghazi Abad and Narrai districts were in grip of lawlessness, he admitted, saying that the state of security has now been improved to great extent and people use to travel without any sense of fear.
He said few months ago after the transition of the third phase, the security of the three districts have been handed over to Afghan forces, which improved the law and order.
“Tribal elders extended their all out support to bolster and maintain security. After the final stage of security transition, people of Kunar will secure their own soil by themselves,” he remarked.
Kunar is though a mountainous region with immense strategic importance, he said but if the Afghan forces are better trained and equipped with advanced weaponry then they could counter any aggression.
“The second move to increase peace and security is to hold wide ranging interactions with tribal elders, religious leaders and youth of the region,” he added.
Safiullah, a resident of Asad Abad noticed remarkable improvement in security as compared to the past.
He said that not a single event of insecurity happened in the province that could spur fear among people that’s why residents fully support local police and security forces.
Muhammad Naser, a resident of Narang district said after the deployment of local police, security and law and order have now improved.
“Two years back, mines were being planted almost daily on roadside. And all bridges between Jalalabad and Asad Abad were blown up by planting mines. After the deployment of local police, neither anyone plants mine nor security is deteriorated,” he added.
Painting a different picture regarding the security in the province, Hakimullah Khan says: “The control of Chapa Dara district is in hands of Taliban.”
“Those who have no personal relations with the Taliban or having no power, they are all set to migrate and leave the area,” he added.
He said the Chapa Dara district has no local police, Afghan forces or other security forces to check Taliban presence.
Shafiqullah, a resident of Ghazi Abad district said that insecurity haunts people in far-flung and mountainous areas but comparatively there is enhanced security on roads leading from the capital to other districts.
Saleh, hailing from Dangam district, said though his district is situated along the boundary which was not secured once but now it has immense security. He said that foreign troops have their personal interests to be in Afghanistan otherwise they have nothing to do with peace and stability in the country.
Ghulam Ali of Manogi district however, said the presence of American forces was a constant source of trouble and insecurity in Kunar, adding after the withdrawal of U. S. troops from his area, security and stability has witnessed remarkable improvement.
