GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) office in southern Ghazni province says 173 polling centres have been closed due to insecurity.
Abdul Naseer Momand, IEC director for Ghazni, told Pajhwok Afghan News there were 406 polling centres in the province. Only 233 of them would be operating on election day and the rest would remain shut.
He added elections would not be conducted in Rashidan, Ajristan, Nawa, Giro and Jaghato districts because of insecurity.
According to Momand, at least 250,000 people have been registered as voters and sensitive election materials have reached many districts.
He added and trainers had also been sent to districts in order to train newly-hired workers on polling procedures.
Sadullah, a resident of Ghazni City, told Pajhwok the security situation was not good even in the provincial capital and there were concerns about the election.
Rahimullah, a resident of Andar, said the security environment was inappropriate in the district. “Many parts of the district are under Taliban control. I don’t think the election would take place,”
Other residents held similar views. But police spokesman Ahmad Khan Sirat said a proper plan had been made for election day.
He urged people to take part in the election and choose their favorite candidate without any fear of violence.
