GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The residents of southeastern Paktia province have demanded of presidential candidates and their supporters to consider national interest, values and moral principles during their election campaigns.
They stressed the presidential candidates should not offer false promises to people and refrain from statements which could lead to divisions in the country and among different ethnic groups.
Dr. Yar Baz Hakimi, a lawmaker from Paktia province and leadership council member of President Ashraf Ghani’s election team, urged candidates to promote good culture of election campaign which could lead to the acceptance of results by all parties.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News that candidates should refrain from irresponsible remarks regarding the country, national unity and national institutions because such statements would generally hamper the national processes like elections.
“I hope and expect the candidates, their allies and supporters to introduce a kind of culture in which no one harms his/her opponent such as in other countries where every candidate performs campaign and does not harm other candidates on social media and other tools of campaign. Every candidate should present their strategies and ambitions in a way that can be constructive and distractive,” he believed.
He said: “We demand of all election teams to follow principles, standards and norms designed for election campaign particularly they should consider national interest supreme and should never convene gathering or express views contrary or against the national interest and norms.”
Sabrena Hemat, a resident of Syed Karm district, said the main reason behind the continued fighting in the country was lack of tolerance and mutual acceptance. She said politicians and candidates should change the old culture and promote a new culture.
“Acceptance of one another is the main demand of peace. Presidential candidates are the elders and leaders of Afghans and they should bring all Afghans together,” she said.
Abdullah Meskin, a resident of Dand-i-Patan district, said presidential candidates and their supporters should not attack one another and should respect each other.
“Presidential teams should be involved in constructive rivalry, they should not make illogical claims, they should tell the people facts and what they have and would do for the nation in existing circumstances,” he said.
From Sunday the presidential campaign was officially launched, which will continue for two months.
