KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Protesting Wolesi Jirga candidates and their hundreds of supporters in northeastern Kunduz province on Monday emphasized on transparency in the election process and said they would close all roads of the province if their demands were ignored.
The candidates and around a thousand of their supporters today started their rally from the municipality office to the governor’s house.
Qadir Hussainkhel, one of the protesting candidates, told Pajhwok Afghan News that votes cast in the Oct Wolesi Jirga election in Kunduz should be recounted.
“Elections in Kunduz were not transparent, we ask the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to recount Kunduz votes, if they do not do so, we will set the commission office on fire,” he warned.
Another candidate, Azizullah Amiri, said that the IEC should separate fraudulent votes from genuine ones.
“We will close all government departments if the commission does not recount Kunduz votes,” he said.
Marzia Rastami, another protesting candidate, said that the IEC made deals over people’s votes.
“We shared all evidence and documents about the IEC corruption with the government, but nothing happened,” she said.
A protestor, Niamatullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News that many of their people were killed and wounded during in violence on the election day but their votes were sold in the end.
The protestors warned to shut all roads of Kunduz if their demands were not addressed.
On the other hand, Kunduz Independent Election Commission (IEC) officials refused to comment on the protest.
