KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday said the Wolesi Jirga elections in southern Ghazni province would be held simultaneously with the presidential election next year.
IEC chief Abdul Baday Sayyad told to a press conference here that the voter registration process would begin in Ghazni province in near future.
He said the Wolesi Jirga polls in Ghazni would most probably be held jointly with the presidential election.
Based on the previous decision, the Wolesi Jirga elections would be based on electoral districts in Ghazni, he added.
On the other hand, a provincial council member of Ghazni, Esmatullah Jamradwal, said the security situation in the province should be improved first.
“Improving security in Ghazni is not possible even in one year so conducting the Wolesi Jirga elections is just mocking the people,” he added.
Habib Rahman Tasir, a resident of Ghazni city, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the ground for holding Wolesi Jirga polls was yet to be paved in Ghazni.
“Insecurity is raging in 14 districts of the province, the government controls only centers of some districts while some other districts are fully with the Taliban, therefore the elections should be delayed for some time,” he said.
After long differences over the election system in Ghazni, the IEC decided to hold the polls in the province on electoral districts, but a group of people opposed the commission’s decision that led to the postponement of the polls.
