Some MPs assisting Taliban propaganda war: Hayat

MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok):  Officials in central Maidan Wardak province on Thursday alleged some Wolesi Jirga members were assisting the Taliban in their propaganda war.
They told a press conference here the Taliban had been planning in recent weeks to carry out suicide and other terrorist attacks in the provincial capital, Maidan Shahr, and some districts.
They claimed some members of the lower house assisted the insurgents in their propaganda war.
Governor Hayatullah Hayat said besides the attacks, the Taliban had the plan to block the Kabul-Bamyan and the Kabul-Ghazni highways in the province to reach their nefarious designs.
The governor said the insurgents had no ability to reach such goals and the Afghan forces with their ability and good coordination had been able to defeat the enemy and cause them heavy casualties.
To frustrate Taliban’s designs, the governor said the security forces twice launched search operations, killing 48 militants, including three commanders, and injuring 71 including another three commanders.
Two security personnel and as many civilians were killed and five security officials and nine civilians were wounded during the operations, he said
“To prevent insurgent attacks, the joint Afghan forces conducted 499 ambushes, 285 search raids and 730 joint patrols and as a result, they detected and defused hundreds of landmines and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy during ambushes,” said Hayat.
Police chief Khalil Andarbi said the insurgents wanted to block the Kabul-Bamyan and Kabul Ghazni highways in Maidan Wardak, but security forces using their techniques frustrated their designs.
The governor lamented some Wolesi Jirga members had assisted the Taliban in advancing their propaganda.
“The lawmakers are not from Maidan Wardak and have not consulted the provincial administration for information, but they promoted the enemy agenda and spoke to the media in their interest,” said the governor, but named no one.
“Some lawmakers showed the enemy as strong and exaggerated their gains while speaking to the media at a time when well-organised coordination exists among security forces in Maidan Wardak. The enemy is neither strong nor can reach its goals.”
The provincial officials urged lawmakers not to participate the enemy propaganda and extend their support towards efforts at strengthening coordination among security forces in Maidan Wardak.
No lawmaker has so far reacted to the statements of the provincial officials.
