Some projects completed, others in progress

KABUL (Pajhwok): Several development projects have been completed and work on others is in progress in eastern Laghman, northern Balkh and central Kabul provinces, officials said on Wednesday.
Two projects costing 24 million afghanis were inaugurated in Laghman. Laghman acting governor Dr. Fazlullah Mujeddedi on Wednesday inaugurated construction work on a retaining wall measuring 230 metres in the Alishang district.
The 11 million afghanis project would protect nearby homes and agricultural land of residents from being flooded by the Aishang River, the governor said.
He said the Japan-funded wall would be constructed in six months and its construction would protect nearly 300 hectors of farm land, 400 families, the Mehtarlam-Sarkano bridge from being threatened by the river.
Laghman provincial council member Atiqullah Abdul Rahimzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the retaining wall would prevent people’s lives from being taken by a flooding Alishang river.
He said the river every year inundated large swaths of land and homes during rainy season, inflicting huge financial and human losses.
Meanwhile, the foundation stone of a building for the office of the National Solidarity Programme (NSP) was laid in Laghman. The building is estimated to cost 14 million afghanis.
Sarhadi Zwak, the provincial government spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the building would be constructed in one year and it would have 18 rooms.
He said the NSP office had no building of its own and was currently being run from a rented house, where NSP officials faced numerous problems to smoothly carry out their affairs.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry said a newly-constructed building for the Sufi Ashqari Middle School was inaugurated on Wednesday in the Paghman district of Kabul province.
The ministry said in a statement said the single-storey building took five months to be completed. It has eight classrooms, four administrative rooms, a boundary wall and other allied facilities.
The ministry said the Japanese-funded project cost $121,000.
The Education Ministry also said a new building for a kindergarten at Razia Sultana High School was also inaugurated in the capital of northern Balkh province on Wednesday.
The single-storey building that cost $50,000 has five room and other facilities, the statement said.  The cost has been provided by a local influential figure, Syed Zahir Roshan.
Also in Balkh, a newly-constructed bridge that connects 16 villages was put into service on Wednesday in the Khulm district.
The bridge has been constructed with financial support from the German Cooperation with Afghanistan (GIZ) at a cost of 8.16 million afghanis.
