KABUL (Pajhwok): Abdul Latif Pidram, head of the National Congress Party (NCP), criticised the unity government on Wednesday, pledging to cobble together an opposition alliance.
Addressing hundreds of his supporters in the Loya Jirga tent in Kabul, he said the proposed alliance would endeavour to strengthen democratic norms and keep a watchful eye on government activities.
The NCP condemned the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the US signed on Tuesday, saying a new national consensus should have been developed on the deal.
Pidram said on the occasion that according to the constitution, a person could only be made the president via ballots.
He said the results announced by the election commission were not the actual outcome or what the voters wanted.
“Therefore, I reserve the right to oppose this government and strive to bring it down,” he remarked, referring to efforts for forming the alliance.
He also underlined the need for fighting for the genuine and constitutionally guaranteed rights of ethnic Tajiks in the country.
“Death to those who promised defending our votes in this very tent but later cut a power-sharing deal based on our ballots,” chanted an NCP supporter during Pidram’s speech.
A Pajhwok Afghan News reporter said a physical brawl erupted in the tent among NCP workers and supporters of Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah. Despite numerous calls from Pidram for order, the situation reportedly worsened, prompting noises and chaos.
