KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Saturday said the vote audit and recount process in some suspicious polling stations has not been started yet, pending correction of the final list in this regard.
Sayed Zabihullah Sadat, acting IEC spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the commission was ready for vote recount and audit of suspicious polling stations.
He said the list from the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) for suspicious polling stations contradicted figures as in one part it had suggested polling stations in 19 provinces required audit but in another part it said stations in 21 provinces needed audit.
“That was the reason IEC sent back the list to IECC for correction”, he added.
Sadat said the IEC did not receive a corrected list of polling stations that require audit. “We will start the recount and audit process of votes once we obtain the corrected list,” he said.
Pajhwok Afghan News tried to contact IECC officials for comment on the issue, but failed.
In the first phase, over 16,500 electoral complaints were registered by presidential candidates. In the second phase, 6,000 objections were lodged regarding decisions of the IECC’s provincial offices.
IECC said election tickets’ objections against the commission’s provincial offices would take 11 days to be responded.
Based on the election schedule, the period of 39 days specified for addressing electoral complaints would end in next six days.
Presidential election was held on September 28. Final result of the election is yet to be announced.
