GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Religious scholars in southeastern Paktia province on Wednesday said taking part in this month’s presidential election was people’s right and responsibility.
They expressed these views at an election related gathering organized by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) regional office in Gardez City, the provincial capital, today.
Qari Khwajauddin Haqbayan, Paktia Ulema Council head, complained that Islamic scholars were only given responsibility but no authority.
However, he did not go into details. Haqbayan urged people to vote for a right person in this month’s presidential election.
He said, “Almighty Allah orders us to cast our votes for someone who deserves it and who can work for peace and stability in the country.”
He accused Afghanistan’s neighbors of interference in the country’s domestic issues and trying to delay the election.
Mualvi Arab Gul Hussian, another religious scholar, in a vailed reference to Taliban militants, said some individuals considered the current political system as wrong. He stressed for bright future they should widely take part in this month’s presidential election.
A number of other religious scholars held similar views and urged people to take part in upcoming presidential elections.
Naqibullah Haidari, IEC head for Paktia, termed Islamic scholars’ participation in election as crucial and said they were trying to motivate people to widely participate in the election.
