KABUL (Pajhwok): Former Wolesi Jirga member and founder of the Mawj-i-Tahawal Afghanistan on Sunday termed the Consultative Loya Jirga ‘an extravagant election campaign’ and against the country’s interest.
She told a press conference in Kabul that in a country like Afghanistan where above 50 percent of people lived under the poverty line, the arrangement of a costly jirga was unfair.
She suggested the money allocated for the event should be distributed among unfortunate people.
The politician said the unity government would spend $5 million on the Loya Jirga in violation of the budgetary policy. According to the Mawj-i-Tahawal Afghanistan, organizing the Consultative Loya Jirga was unfair in current circumstances.
“When the international community and local politicians have intensified their efforts for reconciliation, why the government is convening the Loya Jirga,” she asked, adding so far the agenda and purpose of the jirga remained unknown.
Syed Ali Kazami, spokesman for commission on organizing Loya Jirga, rejected Kofi’s comments that the government wanted to use the event as a tool for election campaign and said the purpose of the event was to create national consensus on peace and reconciliation.
He said the people would be informed about the amount of money to be spent on the Loya Jirga, which was not called into session by the government to gain a political mileage.
