KABUL (Pajhwok): The vote recount began in Kabul on Wednesday after being suspended for seven days, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said on Wednesday.
The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) last Thursday announced invalidation of votes cast at all polling stations in Kabul due to fraud and rigging.
When differences between the two commissions reached the peak regarding the invalidation of Kabul votes, a joint meeting decided the IECC should reconsider its decision.
The meeting was chaired by Second Vice President Sarwar Danish and attended by chief justice, attorney general, head of the oversight commission, heads of the IDLG and the CSO
In line with the IECC decision, the process of recounting and inspection of Kabul votes by the IEC was stopped and resumed today after seven days.
Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, deputy IEC spokesman, said after consensus reached with the IECC, the process of vote recount and inspection was resumed.
“It was agreed with the IECC that the vote recount of Kabul province should resume under a transparent mechanism,” he said.
Ibrahimi said the IECC had marked as cancelled votes of 182 polling stations out of 558 in Kabul and there was need for a recount and inspection of the votes in these polling stations.
He said the recount and inspection of 85 polling stations had been completed and the work resumed under the watch of international observers.
He said including Kabul the primary results of seven more provinces were yet to be released, which would be unveiled in coming seven days.
