KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The week-long delayed voting in the Wolesi Jirga elections concluded in southern Kandahar province without a security incident occurring on Saturday, the acting governor said.
Abdul Hanan Munib attended a press conference in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, along with deputy provincial police chief Rahmatullah Atrafi, IEC provincial head Dr. Nimatullah Wardak and electoral complaints commission head Karimullah Stanikzai.
The governor thanked security forces for maintaining security during the Wolesi Jirga elections in Kandahar and the elections went successful and without any untoward incident.
He was pleased with widespread participation of people in the parliamentary elections despite security threats.
The polling in Kandahar began at 7am Saturday and came to a close at 5pm.
The governor admitted technical problems plagued the voting process at the start but later the problems were resolved.
Deputy police chief Atrafi said the insurgents wanted to disrupt the elections, but they were unable to do so.
IEC chief Nimatullah Wardak thanked security forces for their measures and the media for covering the national process and encouraging people to participate.
He said 172 polling centers were opened in Kanahar City and no polling site was closed. He said voting at some polling sites was delayed after electoral staff did not show up for duty.
He said voting in Kandahar had ended and right now the vote count was underway at all polling stations.
IECC chief Karimullah Stanikzai said they received 350 complaints about irregularities in the elections in Kandahar on Saturday.
He said most of the complaints were about missing of names from voter lists and some about lack of technical facilities.
Reports said voters waited hours in line to cast their ballots throughout Kandahar province amid tight security measures.
The elections in Kandahar were delayed by one week after the provincial police and intelligence chiefs were killed an attack by an elite guard.
