SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Saturday’s Wolesi Jirga elections will not take place in three districts of northern Jawzjan province owing to insecurity, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) regional office said on Wednesday.
Hamidullah Baloch, acting IEC head for Jawzjan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that polling stations would stay shut in Darzab, Mardyan and Khamyab districts where people had also not registered as voters.
He said the elections will take place in the provincial capital, Shiberghan and seven districts and all election materials to these areas had been dispatched.
Deputy police chief Col. Kamaluddin Yarwar told Pajhwok that due high security threats, the elections would not take place the mentioned districts
He said all preparations for the upcoming Oct 20 Wolesi Jirga elections had been made to hold transparent and fair polls in the province.
He said they had requested the central government to send about 100 soldiers to Shiberghan for security on the election day.
Khir Mohammad, a resident of the capital city, hoped security forces would ensure security of polling stations on the election day. He urged security officials to increase the number of check-points on the Election Day.
