JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The governor of eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday asked religious scholars to help the government eliminate extremism and establish peace in the country.
Salim Khan Kunduzi was speaking at a seminar on religious scholars’ role in prevention of drugs and establishment of peace in Jalalabad, the provincial capital.
“Atrocities and bloodshed by terrorists has brought about a bad name to Islam and such activities portray Islam, which is the religion of peace, as violent and a terrible way of life,” the governor noted.
He considered the role of ulema in the peace process as vital and asked them to cooperate fully with the government in this regard.
Kunduzi told Pajhwok Afghan News more than 100 religious scholars had been invited to the seminar to share their views with the government about current issues.
Maulvi Abdul Zahir Haqqani, a religious scholar, alleged that some Pakistani clerics supported the spy-network of their country in their religious fitwas.
He said the Pakistan ulema had declared jihad against Afghan security forces, but they would not consider the activities of their own armed forces.
He condemned the Islamic State (IS) and accused the group of brutally killing innocent people.
Maulvi Sharifullah Rahmani, a lecturer at Nangarhar Islamic University, urged unity among Muslim countries. He, however, alleged some Muslim states were harming the Muslim unity.
