New Zabul peace body chief vows to woo rebels

QALAT (Pajhwok): The High Peace Council (HPC)’s provincial committee chief for southern Zabul province on Tuesday said people and tribes could play an important role in bringing peace to Afghanistan.
Hashmi Garani was talking to Pajhwok Afghan News after the committee’s voting to elect its administrative delegation in Qalat, the provincial capital.
Garani, who was elected as the committee’s chief, admitted that nothing considerable had been done over the past years with regard to the peace process in Zabul, but promised to advance the process with support from people and tribes.
He said individuals who had developed distance with the government would be encouraged to join the peace process through joint efforts with people.
Governor Mohammad Anwar Ishaqzai, who was present on the occasion, told Pajhwok Afghan News that all members of the provincial peace body were trying to play a positive role in the reconciliation bid.
He said the peace body’s new chief enjoyed widespread recognition among the people and he would be able to achieve gains for the provincial peace office.
The peace committee’s leadership was elected at a time when the body has failed to achieve progress during the past eight years.
