Rassoul’s chief campaigner switches sides

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Chief campaigner for Zalmai Rassoul during the April 5 presidential elections in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday declared support to frontrunner Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.
The announcement was made at a gathering, where a number of religious scholars and Sikh community members voiced their support for Ghani in the runoff election due on June 14.
Participants said they were optimistic that the turnout in the second round of elections would be higher than the previous round in eastern provinces.
Haji Amir Khan Yar, who represents Nangarhar in the Wolesi Jirga, said he would support Ashraf Ghani in the runoff. Yar was chief campaigner for Zalmai Rassoul in Nangarhar in the previous round.
Rassoul, a former foreign minister, who finished third in the presidential race, has joined forces with leading candidate Abdullah Abdullah.
“I support Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai because he worth it. The elections showed the masses want Ghani,” Yar said.
Azizullah Din, a member of Ghani’s campaign team, asked the people to widely participate in the runoff election.
Sikh community leader Dr. Amir Singh said they would support Ghani in the second round. “We are Afghans and will participate in the elections.”
Hundreds of people attended the gathering. Religious scholars, who spoke on the occasion, called Ashraf Ghani a preferred choice.
